Officers 2018-2019

Andrea Parra

Hello AMSA! My name is Andrea Parra and I am incredibly honored to be serving as this year’s 2018-2019 AMSA President! I recently obtained my BS in Biological Sciences this past August of 2018, and I am now in the process of achieving my ultimate goal of becoming a physician. I was born in Venezuela and at the age of 12 my parents and I moved to Madrid, Spain, where I lived for 8 years. I moved to the U.S. 4 years ago to begin college, and I transferred to FAU in my sophomore year. That year I became a part of the AMSA family and without doubt, it was one of the best decisions I have made. Becoming actively involved in this wonderful organization has opened many doors for me, making me feel at home again. I am the former Director of International Outreach, in which I planned and organized the international mission trips to the Bahamas and Costa Rica. I am beyond excited to work alongside the rest of this empowering leadership team to offer all possible opportunities to our members, and to make this year a memorable one. AMSA inspired me to become better, to aspire greatness, and to commit to my goals. I hope that each of our members finds what they are looking for when they join AMSA, and that they leave with beautiful lessons learned that they will carry with them in their future academic and professional endeavors. Writing, reading, singing, and traveling are some of the things I love to do. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any ideas, questions, concerns, or traveling plans!

Kimarah Lamothe

Hello my name is Kimarah Lamothe, but most people call me Kim. I am both excited and honored to be serving as Treasurer for the 2018-2019 academic year. I have been a part of AMSA for 4 years now and served as the Co-Director of Fundraising for two years. AMSA means a lot to me because through AMSA I have come across so many opportunities over the years through volunteer experiences, meeting amazing people, and access to a ton of sources that helped me solidify my career path. A little about myself, I am currently studying chemistry and plan on applying to a master’s program in biomedical engineering before making my way to medical school. I have an enormous interest in research, chemical processes and the different ways we extrapolate information gained from observing these processes. I have done previous research in quantum chemistry focusing mostly on molecular modeling. I am currently doing research in neuroscience at FAU, looking at the activity of the hippocampus in learning and memory. My goal in life is to be able to always learn new and interesting things. During my free time to unwind I love watching old movies, foreign movies, reading, and drawing. I think this year will be amazing, we will accomplish so much and I am glad to be serving on the executive board to make this the best year ever.

This is my second year with AMSA and I have loved every minute – so I know you will too! AMSA provides so many wonderful opportunities for everyone pursuing medicine and health: volunteering, shadowing, medical school tours and tips, awesome interest groups, and lifelong friends. Zayna Gichi

Hello AMSA family! My name is Zayna Gichi and I am delighted to be one of your Co-Chairs of the Multicultural in Medicine interest group for the 2018-19 academic year. After acquiring my Associate in Arts degree from Palm Beach State College, I transferred to FAU to finish my Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Behavior. After just two small semesters of being an AMSA member, I decided to run for a leadership position. I witnessed how much hard work our AMSA officers put in to provide their fellow pre-med students with beneficial volunteer, shadowing, research, and clinical opportunities, and I want to give back by doing the same for my peers. As an AMSA officer, my job is to increase awareness of diversity issues in the healthcare field and help AMSA members improve their cross-cultural competence, which will aid them in their future as healthcare professionals. When I’m not doing AMSA work or sitting in a lecture, I enjoy watching soccer matches (huge Liverpool fan), playing video games, cooking, reading, and doing volunteer work in my community. My future goals include becoming a surgeon, joining Doctors Without Borders, becoming a polyglot, and mastering the art of calligraphy. Feel free to contact me via e-mail about our upcoming meetings or events. I can’t wait to meet all of our fantastic AMSA members!

Marla Minkoff

Hey guys! I’m Marla Minkoff and I am more than ecstatic to be your new Co-Chair for Multicultural Medicine along with the lovely Zayna Gichi! Currently, I am a sophomore pursuing a degree in Biology with aspirations to go to medical school and later become an orthopedic surgeon. This upcoming fall semester marks my second year of involvement with AMSA and my first year on the leadership team! I am passionate about diversity and education regarding the impact culture has on medicine. I am Chinese and Ashkenazi Jewish, which makes me very familiar with different medicinal perspectives than what is common in the west. Growing up, the only medicinal treatments in my house were needles and herbs. I didn’t mind it too much, because the idea of acupuncture made the kids at school think I was super tough. Outside of school and medicine, I enjoy going to the beach with friends, reading sci-fi, thrifting, upcycling old clothes, and learning (ranting) about climate change. I have a little Maltese puppy named Bon Jovi and together we love to go on walks, sleep, learn new tricks, and eat. Anyway, I am so grateful to be a part of an organization that is all about helping others, as well as offering guidance, connections, and opportunity. I cannot wait to serve as Co-Chair for Multicultural Medicine this 2018-2019 academic year! If you ever see me, do not be afraid to introduce yourself or ask questions because I love making new friends!

Emily Whu

Hi everyone! My name is Emily Whu and I am so excited for this upcoming semester. I cannot wait to be one of your Specialties in Medicine Co-chairs this year. Specialties in Medicine’s purpose is to educate about the different careers and practices that are involved in medicine. Although this is my first year on the leadership team, I can’t wait to get started! I am so excited to meet all of you and hear your thoughts on different topics and ideas for the organization. This is my second year being a part of AMSA and I absolutely love it. This organization helps and teaches you about the medical field and allows you to make friends and connections you wouldn’t otherwise make. I am currently in pursuit of a B.S. in Biology on the Pre-med track and hope to attend medical school so that I may pursue a career in dermatology in the future. When I’m not studying for difficult Pre-med classes, I like to play sports, hang out at the beach, watch Netflix, or play with my dogs. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need help with anything. Let’s make this the best year of AMSA yet!

Chetan Yarlagadda

My name is Chetan Yarlagadda, but you can just call me Joe. I am so excited to start this semester as a co-chair for specialties in medicine. I am currently a sophomore pursuing a B.S. in biological sciences. I plan to eventually go to medical school and my goal is to go into the field of cardiology. Ever since I was CPR certified in 8th grade cardiology has just been my passion. My co-chair and I are working to educate the members of AMSA about the different specialties there are in medicine and how to pursue your own path in medicine by bringing in guest speakers from various fields of medicine and setting up some fun events. Personally, I like going out and playing basketball with my friends, watching movies, and volunteering at the Delray Medical Center. I am the biggest NBA fan you are ever going to find. Feel free to email me about anything about events or even if you want to talk about the NBA. I look forward to meeting you all this semester!

Mary Gorora

My name is Mary Gorora and I am the Founder and re-elected Co-Chair of Mental Health in Medicine and Research. I am a senior with a major in Neuroscience and Behavior, and a minor in Psychology. My life goals are  attaining both the M.D./Ph.D. degrees and to do research for the National Institute of Health in the neurobiological field. I am currently and undergraduate volunteer research assistant at FAU studying the midline thalamus and its circuitry in learning and memory. I have been apart of AMSA since Fall of 2016, and it has ultimately provided a scaffolding to turn these dreams in to achievable goals. I started this interest group because I am passionately curious about the brain and mental health. A majority of medical schools do not provide their students with information that will give them a deep understanding about mental health, and that is where I would like to make a difference. AMSA has provided me with a podium to present and inform our future physicians on the most up-to-date medical breakthrough information of various mental health topics. Last year we were able to discuss Mental Health in the LGBTQ+ community (including fetal development of hermaphrodites), ADHD, Schizophrenia, the impact of Service Dogs on the physically disabled, Mental Health in Minority communities, and Suicide and Depression. This year I look forward to presenting even more topics! Aside from my academics, I love off-roading in my jeep wrangler, building things with my own two hands, drawing, painting, sculpture, memes, making puns, and video editing! I want to encourage all of our members that are interested in mental health to come and speak to me! I want to hear your passions, experiences, and interests! Together, let’s educate our peers about mental health!

Samantha Maurice

Hi AMSA Members! My name is Samantha Maurice and I will be your Co-Chair of Mental Health in Medicine and Research this 2018-2019 academic school year! Currently, I am a junior undergraduate student pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience and Behavior. This is my 3rd year in AMSA and since day one I have loved how AMSA serves to connect pre-med hopefuls to each other, helping us through the pre-medical process by providing opportunities such as the international medical mission trips, volunteering, shadowing opportunities, and amazing interest groups. As your Co-Director of Mental Health in Medicine I will work to create an educational environment that will prepare our future physicians to seamlessly treat patients afflicted with diverse mental illnesses. A little about myself: my full name is Samantha Audrey Maurice so that means my initials also spell “SAM” so feel free to call me Sam. In my free time I love to curl up in my bed and read, especially mystery novels, for hours and hours. I am also a tutor in the he Center for Learning And Student Success (CLASS), Secretary of the Council for Scholarship and Inquiry, and I am currently doing Behavioral Science Research with Dr. Ester. Outside of FAU I volunteer at Kids In Distress, Inc (KID), helping students with homework and continuing care to fill the gaps and meet the needs of at-risk children. I can’t wait to make this year in AMSA as unforgettable and wonderful as possible! Feel free to email me with any questions and concerns!
