Hello Everybody! My name is Elijah Ortiz and I am so honored and excited to serve as your AMSA President for the 2020-2021 Academic School year. Currently, I am a senior majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Computer Science. Outside of school, I like learning about sustainability, gardening, and longboarding. So, if you find yourself wanting to discuss these topics, feel free to talk to me about it! Prior to assuming this role, I was the Co-Director of Pre-Medical Affairs. In that position, I was able to learn about the foundations of this organization and how we function as a team to serve you guys. Now, I am confident that we will do our best to make your experience in AMSA as great as it can be despite these unique times. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have or even just to talk!
Hello amazing AMSA members! My name is Nicholas Pizzo and I am elated that I have the opportunity to serve as your Vice President for the 2020-2021 academic year! I joined the American Medical Student Association two years ago with the intent of learning more about the field of medicine and becoming acquainted with other pre-medical students like myself. That year, I was the most active member! Last year I served as the Co-Director of Volunteering, where I implemented new volunteering events like Chef for a Day at Quantum House and the Love Serving Autism tennis clinics. Throughout my time in AMSA, I have experienced the joys of working on such a unique leadership team and I am thankful for all of the opportunities I’ve received through this organization.
I am a junior at FAU this year majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Anthropology. I have served for the last two semesters as a Learning Assistant for Calculus 1 through the Math Learning Center. After graduating, I would like to pursue a research fellowship for a year or earn my Master of Public Health before matriculating into Medical School. At the moment, I am keen on the field of interventional cardiology as a potential specialty. For the last two years, I have researched the causes and effects of Citrus Greening Disease, but I am focused on entering neuroscience and/or immunology research lab this year!
Outside of school, some passions of mine include cooking (especially Mediterranean and vegan food!), running, reading, and painting. Additionally, I am an avid environmental advocate and I love to incorporate earth-friendly practices into my daily life, including composting and minimizing single-use plastics. I cannot wait to embark on this new year as your Vice President and look forward to meeting everyone!
I am Justin Xie, your secretary for this academic year. I am a current 3rd-year student at FAU who is double-majoring in Biological Sciences and Anthropology with plans to continue to medical school upon graduation. Originally from Sacramento, California where I grew up and graduated from high school. I am involved in medical scribing, research in the Ken-Dawson Scully lab, and serve as a hospice volunteer with Trustbridge Hospice. Furthermore, I do spend my time volunteering with an on-campus organization called “Splash Pals” where I spend time with special needs children, teaching them to swim and helping to develop their social skills. In my spare time, I enjoy running, weightlifting, and reading. I have been involved with AMSA since my freshman year and have enjoyed seeing the pre-health students connect and share opportunities and connections. If you ever need help with anything AMSA related or just simply want to hang out, feel free to approach me at any point whether in a meeting, on campus, or anywhere else.

Hello, amazing people! My name is Isabella Alvarez, but I go by Izzy. I am delighted to be a part of this fantastic leadership team as one of the Directors for International Outreach. To give you some background, I am a community college transfer and I am part of the first generation of my family to be born in the U.S. The first semester that I transferred to FAU after receiving my AA, I fell in love with AMSA and all that it has to offer. Such as, going to retirement homes, interacting with people who have disabilities, learning different cultures, meeting and interacting with different kinds of doctors, etc.—I was hooked. In the midst of these opportunities, I got plugged into mission trips. Each trip I have been on has shifted my perspective on various things and has humbled me. Going outside of what is familiar is necessary to become the best version of yourself and I believe going to different countries is a great way to do so. Mission trips are something I plan to continue beyond my college years, which makes this experience super exciting as I lend a helping hand. Fun fact, I was not always a Biological Science Major. Originally when I started college, I was an Exercise Science Major to eventually do something in Sports Medicine but soon realized what I specifically want to become—a Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Outside of school, I am also a servant-leader for the young adult ministry at Church of All Nations in which my roles include being a singer on the worship team, as well as, being one of the leaders for the prayer team. A hobby I love to do is kickboxing at my local gym and running long distances. Medicine and health is a passion that keeps growing for me each day and I love that we can all come together and learn from one another in this multicultural organization. I would like to encourage you to join our International Outreach Trips, if you have any questions feel free to contact me or my Co-Director Victoria. We are here to help you and make this journey memorable. Cannot wait to meet you!
Hello AMSA members! My name is Victoria Lugo, and it is a pleasure to serve you as your Co-Director of International Outreach for the 2020-2021 academic year. I am beyond excited to be planning these memorable trips for you all this year and cannot wait to see the memories and experiences you guys will gain from serving others on these trips. Attending these medical outreach trips is definitely one of the most humbling experiences, and it allows you to immerse yourself in different cultures while utilizing your medical skills. I cannot wait to meet you all, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
Hello FAMSA!! My name is Fatima Alukidi and I will be your Co-Director of Marketing for this year. I’m super excited to be serving AMSA and take on this position! I’ve been a part of the AMSA family since 2018 and it’s been an amazing journey since, I joined all GBMs, some interest group meetings, and volunteer events. And of course, my absolute favorites were gross anatomy labs and PROT. This will be my third year in FAU, and I’m pursuing a degree in Neuroscience and Behavior and Minoring in Psychology with aspirations to go to dental school and later specialize in orthodontics. I am also currently working in Dr. Hock’s Lab, where I study the effects of blindsight on the perception of motion and speed. I was born in Baghdad, Iraq and I lived in Amman, Jordan so I can read and speak Arabic (it’s harder than you think!!) I love to travel and absolutely love anything that has to do with food or coffee! During any free time, I always love to learn more about beauty and skincare, I also enjoy cooking and listening to music, and hanging out with friends. I spend most of my time on campus studying so you can always catch me at the library. If you have any questions always feel free to email me.
Hey guys! My name is Isabella Grande, and I am your Co-Director of Marketing for the 2020-2021 academic school year! Mental Health in Medicine and Research
Hello, my beautiful FAMSA! My name is Anuradha Ramdas, Anu for short, and I am thrilled to be one of your Co-Directors of Mental Health in Medicine and Research along with Natasha for the 2020-2021 school year! Mental health is something I am very passionate about and I am *psyched* that I get to share that passion with all of you. Although it isn’t mentioned enough, mental health is a very important part of each and every one of our lives. I believe you’ll find this interest group to be a fun and interesting one, that will provide you with knowledge that you can not only apply to your future careers, but to your own everyday life as well!
Please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, concerns or suggestions you may have!
Hello AMSA! My name is Natasha (Tash) Ramnauth and I am honored to serve as one of your Co-Directors of Mental Health in Medicine & Research, along with Anuradha, for the 2020-2021 year! I recently graduated with my B.S in Neuroscience in Summer 2020 from FAU and I am now pursuing my master’s degree in Biological Sciences at FAU. Mental health is a topic that often takes a back seat to other topics, even by many medical and graduate schools. My mission is to educate our members on the importance of mental health within ourselves and to teach our future health care providers the value of why we should heal our patients not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Joining AMSA has been a rewarding experience. AMSA has provided countless opportunities for me to give back to the community and has helped consolidate my future goals as a physician-scientist. In Spring 2020, I joined Asghar Lab in Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine and I will be continuing with this lab as an MS Student to conduct my research proposal. I am also a microbiology lab teaching assistant. Outside of academics, I LOVE everything Star Wars, learning Bollywood dancing, and playing video games. I cannot wait to meet all of you and talk about mental health!

I am an undergraduate junior seeking a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Medical Doctor. After completing medical school, I seek to do my residency with some branch of the military, and serve my country in many ways.
I am currently performing research in Dr. Binninger’s lab, studying the effects of the deletion of the MSR gene in Drosophila. Apart from that, I am also part of the college of science’s “Soar in 4” Scholars program, as well as a member of the HOSA future health professionals team. I am looking forward to being part of hopefully one of the most productive years in AMSA history. Can’t wait to meet all of my fellow AMSA members!

Hello awesome AMSA members! My name is Karla Menchu-Saban and I am honored to serve as your Co-Director of Records, along with Melissa, for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. Throughout this position, Melissa and I will be keeping track of points for attending sessions, logging volunteer hours, and AMSA T-shirts distribution. I am so excited to work alongside all of the other amazing AMSA officers this year and continue to meet new people.
I joined AMSA during my sophomore year in Fall 2018, which was one of the best decisions I have ever made. AMSA has given me so many opportunities that have helped me grow and develop the ability to learn about the healthcare system such as having the opportunity to provide free blood pressure screening for the community. I participated in two outreach trips New Providence, the Bahamas in 2018, and Escazu, Costa Rica in 2019. Despite pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, I am a certified medical interpreter and CPR/First Aid. Aside from AMSA, here at FAU, I am an Elite Owl Leadership Ambassador with the Office of LEAD, serve as the Secretary for Blood Pressure Screening Association, and work as an Operations Assistant in Campus Rec. Outside of school, I am a Take Stock in Children mentor and a chaperone for the School District of Palm Beach County. Some of the things I enjoy doing are drawing, spending time with my family, walking on the beach, volunteering, traveling, and taking pictures.
I’m super excited to ensure that this year will be filled with informative meetings, awesome events, and professional discussions. I look forward to all of the meetings and events we will be holding for you all in the 2020-2021 academic year! As a First-Gen college student, I am making the most of my college experience. If you have any questions or concerns in regards to internships, leadership conferences, participation in organizations, or anything, do not hesitate to reach out to me because I’m here to help you all. Hey everyone!!! My name is Melissa Garcia Gonzalez and I am honored to be serving as your Co-Director of Records for the 2020-2021 year. I am originally from Cuba and have been living in South Florida since I was about 8 years old. I currently live in Boca and am a rising senior at FAU pursuing a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Psychology. After graduation, I plan on attending medical school to further realize my dream of becoming an Emergency Room physician. Ever since I can recall, I have been fascinated by medicine and the compassion of it, not only in healing but as well as in uniting unlikely people together. My decision to become a doctor is driven by the fact that I genuinely enjoy assisting others and improving their quality of life. I joined AMSA to be able to meet others that shared that same passion for medicine as I do and be able to give back to the community through the amazing opportunities this organization provides. In my free time, I enjoy going to the beach, hanging out with friends and family, and playing with my puppy Milo. I also love volunteering and currently volunteer at West Boca Medical Center, Caridad Center, and Boca Helping Hands. Hi AMSA members! My name is Imtisal Imran and I will be serving as one of your Co-Directors of Research for the 2020-2021 year. I am currently a junior at FAU pursuing a B.S. in Biological Sciences and I plan to attend medical school after graduation (I still don’t know what I want to specialize in because there are too many appealing options). I conduct research in Dr. Nouri-Shirazi’s lab, where we are interested in improving vaccines in order to reduce vaccine failure rates among immunocompromised populations. My current research is focused on developing an in vitro culture system to detect and compare changes in frequency and function of memory B and T cell subsets specific to vaccine antigens within the peripheral blood of individuals. Outside of academics, I love to draw, try new food, and hang out with the people I love. If you ever want to talk to me about research or anything else in general, feel free to reach out to me! Welcome to AMSA and I look forward to meeting all of you!
Hello everyone, my name is Vivek Sreejithkumar and I look forward to serving as one of your Co-Directors of Research for the 2020-2021 academic year! I am a second-year student at FAU majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a minor in Mathematical Sciences. I joined AMSA and began conducting undergraduate research in my past year at FAU, and I have found both to be wonderful opportunities to enhance my interests and to work towards my professional goals of attending medical school and becoming a neurologist. I began my research working with Dr. Tuncer in the department of Mathematical Sciences and conducted a project about mathematical modeling on the epidemiology of the influenza virus. Furthermore, I have also worked in the MPCR Lab with Dr. Hahn, conducting a research project with 2 fellow undergraduate students. The objective of that project was to develop a predictive algorithm that uses artificial intelligence and pose-tracking technology to predict falls in the elderly. In this upcoming year, I look to apply for the Max Planck Honors Program and conduct neuroscience research at the Max Planck Florida Institute at the FAU Jupiter campus. Overall, I am extremely passionate about research and I am super excited to guide my fellow AMSA members through the process of joining a lab and executing a research project. In my spare time when I am not studying or working on research, I enjoy reading, traveling, and passing time with my friends and family. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve on the AMSA leadership team for this year and share my research experience with my peers. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, thank you!
Hello everyone! My name is Dila Boyalikli and I am so excited to be one of your Co-Directors of Volunteering for the 2020-2021 academic year! I am originally from Turkey and this year will be my third year in Florida. I am a sophomore majoring in Biological Sciences. I am planning to graduate from FAU a year early, go to medical school, and eventually become a surgeon. My ultimate goal after being a surgeon is to serve in the rural areas that do not have many opportunities. Other than school and AMSA, I really enjoy sailing, reading parapsychological books, growing my own fruits and vegetables, and cooking Turkish foods. I am a huge nature and animal person. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or just want to talk about anything. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and having an amazing year with our AMSA family!
Hi incredible AMSA members! My name is Hannah Phelps and I am beyond honored to serve as your Co-Director of Volunteering for the 2020-2021 school year! I am a Junior at Florida Atlantic University pursuing a double major in Biology and Neuroscience and Behavior. My goal as your Co-Director of Volunteering is to provide volunteering events that help to serve the community and are fun and engaging in addition to long term volunteering opportunities to pursue on your own. I hope that through our events, you will make connections and build skills that will fuel your passion for medicine and prepare you for professional school, whether that be medical school, dental school, PA school, etc. In addition to my involvement in AMSA, I am involved in undergraduate research in Dr. Wei’s lab where I study the molecular pathways of neurodegenerative disorders. I also have an infatuation with Calculus 1 and work as a Learning Assistant for Calculus 1. Outside of school, I volunteer at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and my church. In my free time, I love to read, spend time with my friends and family, play the Sims, and listen to Twenty One Pilots. I am so excited to meet and serve the community with all of you!
